The rate for Arro Khampa was CNY 820 (EUR 105). We wanted to stay at a local Chinese hotel but also because of its stellar review.

Lijiang

Located in a residential area, the hotel could only be reached through several small alleys that were not accessible by car.

Upon arrival, it took a while to find someone to check us in. Soon after, two other ladies arrived and insisted on helping us with the luggage. Somehow I felt sorry for them carrying our bags which were almost their heights.

The room was on the top floor that was sealed by a customised (purchasable) lock. Unfortunately, I forgot the room category booked; though, from the description on Booking.com, it looked like one of the deluxe double rooms. From my first impression, it was spacious, airy and woody.

Only a layer of thin cement divided the ceiling with the outside. Consequently, it was frigid at night and sweating hot during the day due to the lack of proper isolation.

Opposite the reception, there was a tea room which led to the back garden of the hotel.

The only restaurant was above the reception. I believed it opened only for breakfast and dinner.

After a quick visit to the old town Shuh we headed to the restaurant for dinner. However, that night it was packed, so we ordered room service instead. The menu provided was the same from the restaurant. There were many to choose from Sichuan, Tibetian to Indian.

We ordered the Kung Pao Chicken that came with a cup of Pu'er tea (a fermented tea in Yunnan), soup, rice and some fruits. Everything was simply delicious.

The next morning we woke up in freezing temperature. As soon as the sun went up, it warmed up quickly.

The breakfast was not impressed. Eggs to order, Chinese porridge and fruits were on offer. I had a scrambled egg with some vegetable and a sausage.

Anyway, when we check out, the hotel manager came to say goodbye and gave us some suggestion of what to do in Lijiang. It was a bit too late I thought. The Arro Khampa was thoughtfully designed, but somehow it lacked an identity, and for the price, one could stay at any five stars property in Lijiang.
