review: St. Regis Chengdu
I booked this stay through Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts with a very reasonable rate - CNY 1150 (EUR 150) - which came with breakfast, room upgrade, noon check-in and a credit of CNY 640 (EUR 83) for spa or F&B.
From the Chengdu railway station, we took a taxi to the hotel - CNY 26 / 20 minutes.
Upon arrival, we were welcomed by an elegantly dressed lady at the reception. Before long, our butler introduced herself and lead us to our room. Originally, I'd booked the Deluxe category and was upgraded to Grand Deluxe room.
Standard rooms started from 65 sqm which was usually the size for suites in most hotels. My room had the same size but on a higher floor with a double sinks bathroom with shower and bathtub, a walk-in closet and a bedroom featuring a hideaway TV.
After our visit to the Panda Research Base, we went to the gym shortly before dinner.
On the way to Yan Ting, we stopped by the Decanter for the happy hours. Between 6 and 8 pm, the bar was closed for guests staying in suits and SPG Platinum members. One could order beverages from the menu and there was a small buffet set up at the main table. The lychee martini was divine; a shame that we hadn’t tried their signature bloody mary.
The experience already started before we even stepped into the restaurant. We were welcomed by a lady at the reception followed by the amazing hostess Fiona Dai who assisted us the whole evening.
From there, it was like a harmony of time and space. We were lost in this calming - but sometimes disrupted by a waiter’s high heels clattering on the wood - atmosphere. Each dish arrived at a counter in the middle of the room for examination before it was served. And it kept coming one by one. Our greedy eyes were far bigger than the hunger. In the end, it was enough food to make five adults a happy tummy or bring two in a food coma.
The next morning, we had breakfast quite early as the flight to Diqing departed before noon. The buffet was just as impressive as the one at Marriott Chongqing.
This stay was an unforgettable experience. While the room and the butler service were okay, everything else was perfect.
